The daughter of immigrants, Lucy grew up in a challenging community and experienced many hardships. Lucy fell through the cracks, ended up on juvenile parole and dropped out of high school, but through hard work and the investment of people who believed in her, she got her GED, enrolled in community college and earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Southern California.

From there, she worked her way through UNLV Law School and ran for office to represent the community she grew up in. Upon her election in 2010, Lucy became the first Latina elected to the Nevada legislature. She was promoted to a leadership position prior to the start of the 2013 legislative session, serving as an Assistant Majority Whip and also served as Vice-Chair of the Nevada Hispanic Legislative Caucus.

Lucy has successfully passed landmark legislation to improve the way young people are tested in high school, to protect consumers from predatory unauthorized practice of law, and to protect victims of domestic violence from their abusers. Lucy continues to be a political leader serving as a founding board member of Our Revolution; a national political advocacy organization founded by Senator Bernie Sanders, and also provides political commentary on national media outlets.
