A #HeartofHaitiLBC Valentine's Day Connection

heart_of_haiti_macys_logo_socamom_smallIt’s been three years since the earthquake in Haiti struck. However, many Haitians are still living in tents in what is considered the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. We are proud to be part of a very special collaboration with Heart of Haiti for Valentine's Day because celebrating the ones we love we can give a gift that gives back. Macy’s Heart of Haiti's mission upholds the belief that “trade not aid” is a powerful way to create sustainable work and much-needed financial opportunities. #LatinaBloggers have been asked to insert a picture of a loved one into a Heart of Haiti metal frame, ammered and varnished by hand, and tell us why that person is so special to them. Follow the #HeartofHaitiLBC hashtag this week on Twitter to read these heartwarming posts. You  also need to head over to Pinterest to see the assortment of frames with the blogger's pictures of their loved one. heartofhaitiframes We absolutely loves these frames, and strongly believe in the Heart of Haiti mission. If you would like to purchase a frame for a loved one (or yourself!), they are exclusively sold at Macy's.

When I saw the hash tag for today's Mom Bloggers for Social Good tweet party - I was like, yes! of course it all starts with Moms. As Jennifer James wrote healthy Mom means "thriving babies, healthy families, and lives that reach their potential".

The hash tag also resonates a lot with me because I am a firm believer that we Moms lead by example in our houses and our communities. I am sharing the picture of my Mom as an example that it all starts with Mami - she worked for many years for UNICEF and is now involved with UN Women. I grew up in a household where dinner topics were salud materno-infantil, vaccines, basic hygiene, malnutrition, gender equality and lately HIV-AIDS. At the same time my Mom is my biggest ambassador and supporter - just like I am for my child and I'm sure you are for yours. So back in 1986 she was in Sri Lanka, standing in front of a hospital, learning and doing what she knows how to do best. Many years later I am writing about the same issues my Mom helped and witnessed on the ground. We are both helping, I am lending my voice and my writing and hopefully can inspire my son while I do it.

I want to invite you to join your voice (and tweeting power) to the twitter chat #ItStartsWithMoms. You can:
