The Beauty of Being Latina: Why Diverse Representation in Media Matters

beauty-of-being-latina.jpg

This year’s #WeAllGrow Summit keynote panel, The Beauty of Being Latina: Why Diverse Representation of Our Community Matters in Media and Ads, was made possible by our title sponsor Dove. Moderated by Carolina Contreras of Miss Rizos Salón and featuring stellar panelists Jillian Mercado, Shakira Barrera, Nolwen Cifuentes and Rosie Molinary, the conversation centered around Latinx representation by the media and why it matters.

In keeping with the theme of this year’s Summit – We Are Changemakers – panelists shared what inspired them not just to advocate for more and better representation in the media, but to use their careers and influence to create the change.

Here’s just a bit of what these women had to say about their commitment to a diverse representation of our community …

Carolina Contreras

Carolina Contreras is the founder of Miss Rizos Salón, one of the first natural hair salons in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Imagine walking into the toy section of a store and not seeing a doll that looks like you. Imagine watching telenovelas all of your life and noticing that none of the protagonistas look like you. Imagine being enamored by all of the Disney princesses only to realize that none of them have your kinks and your coils. Imagine going to the supermarket and as you’re helping mami with the groceries, you notice that none of those beautiful models on the covers of magazines are brown like you. Imagine being a movie buff and a comic book addict and noticing that none of the leads and the superheroines look like you. Imagine excitedly walking through the hair product aisles in stores and seeing that none of the products or tools were made for you. I grew up thinking that there was obviously something terribly wrong with me. I didn’t know then what I know now and I felt like my mother felt and my mother’s mother felt – that I was born dañada de fábrica and I needed to be fixed.

Jillian Mercado

Jillian Mercado is a model and activist at the forefront of the new wave of models challenging beauty ideals and the lack of representation of people with disabilities in the fashion industry.

jillian-mercado.jpg

I wanted to be an editor to hire people who looked like me because I didn’t see not a single soul out there in like the level that I thought they should be seen … My first gig was a world-wide Diesel campaign and seeing my poster on a boat in Venice, Italy –not California, Venice, Italy! I was like HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! And the amount of love and messages I got from people all around the world, I knew that what I thought my career was to be behind the scenes had to now be in front of the scenes because I had to pave the path of people with disabilities who had never seen themselves anywhere, period.

Shakira Barrera

Shakira Barrera is an actress, dancer and activist. She currently appears on the Emmy-nominated show “Glow” and “It’s Bruno.!”

Shakira-Barrera.jpg

I became a Fanta girl at 19 and I didn’t know that acting was a job. I grew up with two moms: one of them from Nicaragua, another one from Cuba. I’m first generation. They had no clue that this was actually a career. When I became a Fanta girl it was the first time I used my voice to speak in front of the camera and it was the first time that I knew this was actually a job. Like wow! A campaign, a commercial with my face. At the time I was in college, going through a lot of insecurities and I think that my breakthrough moment was when I realized that I had to step up because the opportunity was there and they wanted me. So it was me accepting that I was a Fanta girl and I had to keep saying it to myself like “they want you, they want you, so you gotta get over it girl ‘cause you got the job.”

Nolwen Cifuentes

Nolwen Cifuentes is a Los Angeles-based photographer known for capturing a mix of raw and dreamy portraiture. Her interests lie in shifting social consciousness, breaking down gender norms and representation.

nolwen-cifuentes.jpg

The only reason I got into photography was to explore being not represented.

Rosie Molinary

Rosie Molinary is the author of “Beautiful You: A Daily Guide to Radical Self-Acceptance” and “Hijas Americanas: Beauty, Body Image, and Growing Up Latina.” She teaches at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte; serves as a national Dove Self-Esteem Project educator; offers workshops and retreats; and speaks on self-acceptance, body image, self-care, the Latina experience, non-profit management and intentional living.

rosie-molinary.jpg

I started using journaling and reflection writing in my classroom a lot and that inspired me to go get a masters in fine arts and creative writing and over the course of that program I wrote a collection of non-fiction essays and poems that were about my coming of age experience through the lens of my ethnic identity, beauty perception and sort of perception of being a woman. And that book was called “Giving Up Beauty.” And at the end of my graduate experience, my final advisor came up to me and said, “Are you gonna publish?” I said, “No, I really belong in a classroom.” He said, “You have a pretty literal understanding of a classroom.” And he said, “Have you learned anything from a book?” And I was like, “Are you kidding? Books saved my life!” He said, “Yeah.” And he said, “Would you have felt better at 16 reading any of the stuff you just spent the last two years writing, would you have felt less lonely?”

At the end of the day, we all just want to be seen.

#WeAllGrow’s CEREMONIA Welcome Party co-created with AARP Proves That Female Energy is Ageless

ceremonia.jpg

#WeAllGrow Summit officially kicks off with a party and this year’s party was pure fuego. #WeAllGrow Summit’s CEREMONIA Welcome Party co-created with AARP created a space for the Diosas, Lobas, Brujas, Guerreras and Sabias in us all to harmonize and live life without limits – vivir la vida sin cuenta – for the relaunch of AARP’s #cincuentañeros campaign.

From women on the journey to welcoming new life to those fighting to be seen to those allowing themselves to simply be present, the Ceremonia was a welcoming space for all Changemakers and the public expression that together, not apart, we make a symphony. Five hundred Latinas set the tone for the weekend by honoring their heritage guided by the five archetypes of female energy – Diosa (goddess), Loba (wolf), Bruja (healer), Guerrera (warrior) and Sabia (wise) – brought to life by the Brooklyn Bruja’s surrealist art for each archetype.

Diosa

The Diosa archetype reminds us of our power and how it’s transmitted throughout generations.

Loba

The Loba archetype channels the fearless leader within.

Bruja

The Bruja archetype celebrates and embraces our capacity to heal.

Guerrera

The Guerrera archetype honors the strength we use to fight injustice and uplift our communities.

Sabia

The Sabia archetype encourages us to trust our intuition and knowledge.

Flower crowns by PrettyLilThings greeted and encouraged Changemakers to crown themselves poderosas and get on the same vibration to welcome the magic of community in store for #WeAllGrow Summit. The soundtrack of the evening was provided by a live performance courtesy of Las Cafeteras and the musical stylings of DJ Chava.

AARP was on hand and determined to disrupt the conversation around aging by reminding us that female energy is ageless and that we are all a force to be celebrated at every age. The Ceremonia may be over, pero ¡seguimos poderosas!

How #WeAllGrow Field Trips Transformed the Changemakers Within

field-trops.jpg

#WeAllGrow Summit field trips set the tone for the weekend’s festivities, so what better way to start than with intimate activities designed to transform the changemaker within? This year’s field trips stretched us in ways that provoked our growth and created avenues for each of us to do so in safe spaces, together, not just individually but as a community. #WeAllGrow sponsors know that changemaking is a journey that requires persistence and encouragement from fellow chingonas and they came prepared to equip us with experiences that influence how we understand the world and how we understand ourselves.

We Are Changemakers.

DOVE

dove.jpg

Dove wanted to #ShowUs how far we’ve come, so attendees started the day by writing a letter to their younger selves as a reminder that we are enough. This reflective entry point segued into a relaxing meditation session filled with breathing exercises and self visualization. To top off the day with sisterhood in mind, Dove led attendees in a dance class that made it easy to bond with one another while breaking a little sweat.

Changemaker Takeaway: Write a letter to your younger self every few years to remind her how far she’s come.

baby DOVE

mamas-mimosas-baby-dove.jpg

Finding camaraderie among fellow Changemaker moms can be tough in between grinding and parenting, so Baby Dove made sure to get these women together for Mamás and Mimosas to have frank conversations about pregnancy and birth, while emphasizing the need to create more varied and honest portrayals of those experiences. Motherhood comes with an unspoken learning curve, and the Changemaker moms know they need to lean on each other and be unafraid to ask for help.

Changemaker Takeaway: Be unafraid to ask for help and offer to help fellow Changemaker Moms.

YOUTUBE SPACES LA

virtual-tech-youtube.jpg

YouTube provided the umph we needed to hit the ground running once we get back home to reality. But before that, YouTube showcased its virtual reality equipment that allows content creators to make 360 content to watch on the YouTube app. YouTube’s state of the art equipment and accompanying classes are accessible to any creator with at least 10K subscribers, and YouTube panelists Doralys Britto, Dulce Candy, and Jenny Lorenzo all echoed the message on how to achieve that: consistency is key! So, what are you waiting for? Get to creating!

Changemaker Takeaway: Consistently creating content is the key to growing a dedicated audience.

RED BULL AMAPHIKO CONNECT

redbull-amaphiko.JPG

Red Bull Amaphiko set the ambience for the day by welcoming attendees to a picturesque space filled with greenery and mapped out activities for intuition and reflection to achieve one goal: to find their personal story. One stand out activity that shifted attendee mindsets included writing down core beliefs, creating a list of intentions and desires for the future and comparing how the beliefs and desires align in order to create an action plan for change. How do your beliefs and desires align?

Changemaker Takeaway: Create a list of what you want and what you believe and assess how they align with each other to ensure you’re on the right path.

LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC

LA-Philharmonic.JPG

The Los Angeles Philharmonic treated attendees to an exclusive preview of their long-anticipated performance of “Symphony of a Thousand,” its first ever performance of Mahler’s 8th Symphony at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The orchestra and chorus rehearsed for the first time in the concert hall before their opening performance, and our Changemakers were the first to take a listen. They followed the sneak-peak to visits to the Broad Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art, all within walking distance of the concert hall. This cultural hub is nestled in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, a go-to place for Changemakers when they need a dose of inspiration.

Changemaker Takeaway: Visit the Broad Museum, MOCA, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall for a performance from the Los Angeles Philharmonic when you need to rejuvenate your spirit.

LONG BEACH CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU

nadie-en-el-mundo-es-ilegal.JPG

The Long Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau showcased Long Beach with a boat of the present and a boat of the past, Harbor Breeze Cruise and the Queen Mary, providing attendees a relaxed setting to meet fellow Changemakers while also getting to know the area. Between boat rides, attendees paid visits to the Aquarium of the Pacific and the Museum of Latin American Art, where fellow chingonas agreed they needed to return with their kids to teach the importance of sustainability through exhibits at the aquarium and highlight Latin American artists they’re inspired by.

Changemaker Takeaway: Plan a day trip to Long Beach, where you can not only relax and recharge but also be intentional about the growth you gift yourself.

#WEALLGROW SUMMIT 2019 WELCOME PARTY: CEREMONIA, in Co-Creation with AARP

We are kicking off our fifth #WeAllGrow Summit with a celebration of the magical sisterhood we’ve created together and the powerful mujeres you each are: CEREMONIA.

Ceremonia PNG-01.png

A ceremonia is a ritual gathering to celebrate a special occasion. Our CEREMONIA is to celebrate you and all the ancestors that have brought each of us to this sacred place and time where we have the privilege of being together for three magical days to share what makes us each unique, wise, beautiful and powerful – ¡con una buena fiesta!

CEREMONIA Welcome Party is in co-creation with AARP Cincuentañeros. Together, we’re honoring these five archetypes of female energy:

DIOSA

FINAL diosa.jpg

LOBA

FINAL wegrow loba.jpg

BRUJA

FINAL bruja.jpg

GUERRERA

FINAL guerrera.jpg

SABIA

FINAL Sabia.jpg

From the moment you enter CEREMONIA, your senses will be transported with the scent of copal filling the air and the ancestral beat of a shamanic drum guiding you into the space.

You will be crowned with beautiful flowers created by @PrettyLilThings and intuitively guided to embody one, any or all of the five archetypes brought to life via the beautiful collage illustrations created by @thebrooklynbruja just for you and this moment.

The Sabia in you will find her way to the AARP Cincuentañeros hut where you will have an encounter with your higher self and enjoy the many gifts you deserve.

YsURauDr.jpg

What’s a good CEREMONIA without música and dancing??! We couldn’t think of a better band than LA-natives Las Cafeteras to bring in the vibes remixing roots music and telling modern day stories. Las Cafeteras create a vibrant musical fusion with their Afro-Mexican beats, rhythms, and rhymes to deliver inspiring lyrics with a unique East LA sound and positive message.

Lilly Chavarria, aka DJ Chava – a trailblazing Mexicana in the Chicago nightlife scene as a female DJ, will infuse the night with the beats that we love to keep us vibing high in sisterhood.

We’re sure you’re wondering “but what do I wear to a CEREMONIA?” And the answer is anything that makes you feel your most magical and joyful self! We do have this Pinterest board for a bit of inspiration but nothing beats a style that only you can embody. Be you. We adore you.

The #WeAllGrow CEREMONIA Welcome Party, in co-creation with AARP Cincuentañeros , will kick off three days of inspiration, growth and community. Make sure you download our official app for the full Summit schedule and add the party to your personal agenda for Thursday, May 30th from 7pm to 10pm.

We see you. You are a CHANGEMAKER.

The LA Garden started from the love of the arts and gardening. Dianna Martinez wanted to create something that represents her as well as bring in something new to the table. TLAG crafts unique garden pieces for all occasions. It all started from recycling light bulbs and turning them into planters. Then handcrafting wooden planters with original hand painted designs paired with plants/succulents to unique floral & succulent bouquets and hair pieces. And now, they also host garden parties where guests get to paint, plant and wine! It is a fun and relaxing activity for guests of all ages.

The Salvaged Sawhorse started as a way to cope with Jennifer Velasquez’s chronic migraines. Desperately searching for a way back to the person she was before her daily headaches, she began setting intentions each day and writing affirmations on sticky notes that she stuck everywhere: her desk, bedside table and even the bathroom mirror! As she built herself up, a line of products for intentional living and self-care evolved. She creates affirmation decks, weekly planners, intention setting tools and more all to help others effortlessly lead a life that’s aligned with their values with little nudges to take time out for themselves.

WordPress.com Storytellers 2019 Announcement

Every year since 2015, #WeAllGrow Summit has hosted six incredibly fearless mujeres to share their stories on the Storytellers stage. With their stories of courage, resilience, leadership, generosity, and growth they made us feel compassion, empathy, empowerment, sisterhood, y mucho más deeply in our souls.

As we celebrate the power of Latinas as the driving force in this country at #WeAllGrow Summit 2019, this year’s Storytellers will be bold, loud and powerful!

We’re thrilled to introduce WordPress.com as our official Storytellers sponsor for #WeAllGrow Summit 2019!

DO ANYTHING

What would you do if you could do anything? WordPress.com helps people turn their great ideas into better realities - whether it's chronicling their travels, starting a new business, writing a news site, or sharing their passion. During #WeAllGrow Summit 2019, our Storytellers will share their “Do Anything” stories and show us how the feeling of limitless possibility drives people to change the world.

We’re so excited to welcome a new group of fantastic Storytellers, and that could be YOU! Are you ready to become a beloved #WeAllGrow Storyteller?

THE DETAILS

The six selected Storytellers will attend #WeAllGrow Summit and Wellness Day 2019 courtesy of WordPress.com. That’s right - if selected you will attend our sold-out Summit with an all-expenses-paid experience. This includes two conference passes, round-trip airfare for one, and a three-night stay at Hotel Maya. We’re not done, though! Every one of the six hand-selected storytellers will be able to invite one blogger/creator friend to receive a conference pass to #WeAllGrow Summit and Wellness Day 2019 and three nights in a shared room with you at Hotel Maya!

Per tradition, the amazing Kathy Cano Murillo (the one and only Crafty Chica) will be back as our host, and she’ll also provide coaching via video conferencing in the weeks leading up to the Summit. She’s inspiring, helpful, and a storyteller in her own right! Storytellers would not be the same without her.

Winners will be chosen by a panel of judges comprised of the WordPress.com team, Kathy Cano Murillo and #WeAllGrow Latina Network. So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to start brainstorming those pitches and submit! Deadline to submit is Wednesday, January 23rd at midnight PST.

Below find all the details and breakdown of the process. ¡Buena suerte, amigas! We can’t wait to feel your stories!

THE PITCH

  • Main topics to focus on. Note that we will only consider pitches along this topic:

    • Do Anything - how the feeling of limitless possibilities and being able to "do anything" is one of the biggest traits Changemakers possess. Share the moment you realized you could do anything, and how that drove you to make a change.

  • Stories must be original and true

  • 1 to 2-minute video pitch sharing only the main arc of the story.

  • Stay away from wide topics like "the story of my life" or "how I became a blogger" or “why I launched my business” and narrow it down to a very specific moment or anecdote that leads to your story of “Do Anything.”.

  • Video pitch must be uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo (as Unlisted is fine) and link shared for submission.

  • Note we are not looking for a professionally produced video. We’re only judging the quality of your story as it will be told on stage.

  • Can be bilingual, but at least 80% must be in English

  • You may submit as many times as you'd like

THE DEADLINE

All pitches must be received via the online form by 11:59 pm PST on January 23rd, 2019. Full terms and conditions here.

The Beauty of Evolution

180303_180927-X3.jpg

Saturday morning of #WeAllGrow Summit 2018 opened with four separate keynotes by four outstanding women. Michelle Poler, Gaby Natale, Ana Lucia Cottone and Eliana Murillo each shared their experiences with change and how to find the good in evolving into who we are meant to be.

Throughout the keynotes, we learned how scary change can be - it's incredibly uncomfortable and the outcome is unknown so we don't actually know what's going to happen. When your life begins to alter, it can feel like you're no longer in control. But it’s important, as women and as Latinas, to find the beauty in your constant evolution.

Without change, we stay static. Without change, we aren't able to experience new things. The growing pains of change can be tough but the results are more than we could ever want because, oftentimes, we end up discovering exactly who we are meant to be.

These four women opened their hearts to us and shared how moments filled with incredible amounts of evolution brought them into their new.

The Power of Storytelling, presented by Red Bull Amaphiko

180302_192514-4-X3.jpg

To close out the first full day of #WeAllGrow Summit 2018, attendees heard from four badass women about the power of storytelling. Presented by Red Bull Amaphiko, this keynote session focused on the importance of our past experiences and how they shape our future, as well as the need to use our voices to create change.

Lucy Flores, Carolina Rubio MacWrightRosa Clemente, and Paolo Mendoza bravely took the stage to share their journeys. While all women come from very different backgrounds, each have spent their lives harnessing their voices to drive impact. Through their individual activism, we left with the same message - we cannot sit ideally by and expect change. We need to be the powerhouses driving the change because we are strong and powerful enough to shape society. There is no time to waste because everything we need can be found inside ourselves.

Here are some of the most powerful quotes from the session.

Lucy Flores

Vice President of Public Affairs at mitú

Our stories matter. Our journeys matter. Our voices matter. They’re so powerful when we can connect our experiences and perspectives to something that is bigger than us.
— Lucy Flores
Every single one of you has an incredible story to tell.
— Lucy Flores

CAROLINA RUBIO MACWRIGHT

ARTIST, IMMIGRATION ATTORNEY & ACTIVIST

Brave days make us who we are, they build our lives and they especially define us.
— Carolina Rubio MacWright
Can you imagine the power we could bring if everyone in this room had a brave day together?

Rosa Clemente

Why do we always learn about the history of our oppression but never the history of our resistance?
— Rosa Clemente
My faith always lies within the people - the warriors; the unapologetic black and brown sisters, brothers and non-gender conforming people; the working class; and the rebel rousers. My faith lies in knowing that we have a strong legacy, that we walk with our ancestors and that the future is my daughter.
— Rosa Clemente

Red Carpet Fashion - What to Wear?

170302_195257.jpg

We are just days away from one of the most exciting weekends of the year, #WeAllGrow Summit 2018. As you know by now, Neutrogena is rolling out the red carpet and hosting a fabulous cocktail-evening just for us. Now comes the stressful part, what to wear? No worries! We are here to share some ideas and inspiration to get you red-carpet ready with pieces you probably already own and won’t have to break the bank account.

Pastels

IMG_3946.PNG

Spring is right around the corner and tones that never go out of style are pastels. Choose a tone that suits your skin color along with fabric that sits well on your body. Soft pinks, yellows, and lilac tones are great choices. Accessorize with simple delicate pieces that will add the perfect touch or go for one bold piece that will be the key point of your look. You can choose from statement earrings, a belt, clutch, or heels.

Jumpsuits/Menswear

IMG_3947 (1).PNG

Not going the traditional way for a cocktail event is also a great way to make a fashion statement. Choose from a jumpsuit that clinches onto your body on all the right places. Go for a solid color and no prints. Add a few bold accessories that will give the outfit a POW! Try adding a belt and a touch of gold pieces to complete your outfit.

Texture

IMG_3948.PNG

Mixing textures is a great way to mix and match pieces you already own. Add a touch of lace, sequins, or satin and combine with a simple skirt or shrug. Remember less is more. Only mix into your look one or two textured pieces and keep accessories very minimal.

Lace

IMG_3950 (1).PNG

Lace has been raving for some time now. Look for lacy pieces that again will work with your body shape. Choose from tops to heels or a clutch. If you’re thinking of going for the dress route, definitely try an array of dresses and styles just to see what looks best. Since lace is a strong statement keep accessories dainty.

Prints and Color

IMG_3951.PNG
IMG_3955 (1).PNG

Mixing both prints and color can be unpredictable. In this case go for a print that is not rowdy but soft to the eye. If you’re adding color stick to tones that suit each other and make sure no more than three are used. Add some nude heels or sandals and very minimal jewelry.

Or just opt for a colorful dress! A cocktail affair is a semi-formal event with a bit more room to play with fashion and personal style. Play around with pieces in your closet and the main thing is that you feel beautiful and comfortable.

The Little Black Dress

IMG_3953.PNG
IMG_3954.PNG

You can never go wrong with a LBD. You can choose from various cuts to fabrics. Black is always a classic and one way to update it is by mixing in prints, color, and statement jewelry. You don’t need a lot to look red carpet ready. Just a few key pieces to spice up your outfit.

Top Ten Insider Tips for #WeAllGrow Summit First Timers

Congratulations! After months - or perhaps years (!) - of stalking the #WeAllGrow hashtag, you took a deep breath, closed your eyes went ahead and bought yourself a ticket. And you did it before they sold out. Congratulations! Now you get to panic.

(No, no, please don’t panic.)

You have nothing to worry about, PROMISE.

I know that seems easy for me to say - after all, I’m talking to you from the inside (I guess that can sound obnoxious, but I’m part of the team that has been working to make your Summit as amazing as possible, so I guess that makes me an ‘insider’).  #WeAllGrow Summit is an opportunity for growth, for sisterhood, and just plain fun. You have nothing to worry about.

But, I know what it’s like to be nervous the first time you do anything. So let me share with you ten Insider’s Tips to help you put your mind at ease.

weallgrow-summit-2016---day-3_25669867482_o.jpg

Meet New People

Hi, yes, I realize this is obvious because it’s all of these new people that are causing los nervios, but hear me out. Even if you literally don’t know a soul, you will automatically find people that are like you - and that’s a very good thing. Like attracts like. But there’s a lot of power in meeting people that are very different from you - that is how you truly expand your network, and those are the people who make life interesting. It’s usually very hard to find people that are different from you - unless, perhaps, they are coming from all over the country to Long Beach so that they can meet new people?

Add People On the Spot

When you meet someone even remotely cool, add them to your phone, follow them on social media, or exchange numbers right then and there. Just do it. Trust me on this.

Try New Things

Maybe you’re A Very Serious Writer and could care less about Instagram, but this is your chance to learn something new and you should take it. And if you only use your oven to store pots and pans, well, welcome to the club! Maybe we should check out that food blogging session together, don’t you think?

170304_184325.jpg

Wear Sensible Shoes

Ah, who am I kidding? This isn’t really the time to be sensible. I encourage you to take this opportunity to be as impractical and glorious as you probably don’t get to be in your everyday life. Wear the heels, or the bedazzled Vans, or wear Frida-esque flowers in your hair if that’s what you’ve always wanted. Or maybe you have to dress up for work everyday and you just want to chill in jeans and statement tees. Whatever feels like the most fantastical version of you - go for it.

And then, it is my hope that when you go home, you give yourself permission to be you at your most authentic and bold where it matters most. But that takes guts, and guts take practice. Summit is a safe space for that.

(And the truth is, most people end up in chancletas at some point.)

weallgrow-summit-2016---day-2_25616285481_o.jpg

Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

Ride a helicopter? Walk up to a microphone to ask a question in front of over 400 women? Pitch your dream brand? Ask the amazing woman who was in line with you at registration if maybe she’d like to collaborate on a business together?

YES. YOU SHOULD DO THAT.

Relax

Find time to relax. Thankfully, #WeAllGrow Summit happens in a beautiful location and there’s room to spread out. Take a moment to connect with yourself and recharge your batteries. Or treat yourself to a margarita or a sweet bite at one of the sponsor suites.

Write it Down

Take notes, on paper, if possible. Write down words that inspire you (and the name of the person that said it, so that you can thank them later). Write down that insane business idea without worrying about how you’re going to make it happen. You will figure out later, but only if you remember it. So write it down. (And put your name on your notebook in case you misplace it.)

weallgrow-summit-2016---day-2_25080809154_o.jpg

Take Pictures. Now Take Some More. Post your favorites.

You will never regret taking too many pictures. And be sure to post a ton of them during Summit - not everyone is going to take my advice and add you on the spot, but pretty much everyone searches the hashtags in the evenings (so don’t forget those!) and seeing your photo from earlier that day is a great reminder of the fun times - they are also an amazing conversation starter when you find yourself at the same table with a new friend the following day.

Have a Plan

As fun as Summit is, it is an investment of time and money and you do want to make sure you get the most out of it. What ‘getting the most out of it’ means is going to be different for everyone, so you need to make a plan for what what is important to you. Make sure you know ahead of time what sessions you don’t want to miss, which sponsors you want to meet, who you want to introduce yourself to. Throw in a bit of flexibility to balance things out, and you’re golden.

Shine

Don’t hide your light. We want to meet you - that’s why we’re here. Yes, meet other people and learn from them, but also share your amazingness with the #WeAllGrow community. It’s OK to share the amazing things you’ve done - or are planning to do. We want to know.
