As a Los Angeles native, Yarel was born the first of three children to Mexican immigrant parents in the San Fernando Valley, where she excelled in her studies as a self-professed “nerd.” It was as an undergraduate student at the University of Miami that Yarel fell in love with journalism. As a student, Yarel obtained prominent internships at local television stations throughout Miami, which sparked her love of television. Now as the host of Universo Now and Universo Rex on NBC Universo, she is the face of entertainment, lifestyle and music for NBC Universo.
In addition to her NBC Universo on-air duties, she has been an in-demand, on-air host across the NBC-Universal family, including E! Latino, Telemundo and MSNBC. Yarel has proven time and again that whether it’s hosting the Alma Awards or covering the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections, her voice is equal parts unique and representative of the fastest growing population in the United States.
Yarel has become a highly sought after speaker/panelist for discussions dealing with Latino youth and empowerment and is heavily involved in organizations that are near and dear to her heart, like Corazón de Vida and RAYO (repartiendo amor y oportunidas). She was recently honored by the Hispanic Women's Corporation with their National HWC Youth Leadership Award, commemorating her support of the community and her culture. She also recently hosted the Influencer Summit in Miami – being considered an influencer on all social media and digital platforms.
